The Herb Diaries is going to be a regular feature of the Dream Amethyst Witchery blog. I’m starting with the humble, yet beautiful, primrose because it is in abundance as I walk near to my home. Primroses have a long history of being associated with witchcraft and magic. In some European folk traditions, primroses were believed to have magical powers and were used in various ways in spells and rituals. So how are you going to introduce primroses into your witchcraft?
Feel the love
One common use of primroses in witchcraft was to create love potions and what isn’t to love about that? The flowers were thought to have the power to attract and enhance love. They were therefore often used in spells and charms to help people find romantic partners. The primrose was also believed to possess the power to reveal secrets, so it was sometimes used in divination rituals.
Keep psychic vampires from your door
In some traditions, primroses were believed to be a protective plant. They were used to ward off evil spirits and negative energies. Who couldn’t do with that? The flowers were often placed in doorways or windows to keep these negative forces at bay. They’re really pretty little flowers anyway, so why not try these unassuming bouncers?
Calling upon Freyja
Additionally, primroses were sometimes used in spells to help with fertility and childbirth. The plant was believed to have a connection to the goddess of fertility and was often used in rituals to honor her.
Overall, primroses were seen as a powerful and versatile plant in many traditions of witchcraft and magic, and were used in a variety of ways to help people with their various needs and desires. If you’re lucky enough to have them in your garden, think about how they can help your inner witch. If you don’t have any, why not get hold of some seeds and plant some? Turn your witchy fingers green!
